The Junction Races is one of the oldest bush race meetings in Western Australia. Established in 1907 as The Lyons and Minilya Amateur Racing Club, the first race meeting was held on the Box Gully Flats just outside of Gascoyne Junction township. During this time, most racehorses were from local stations and were walked for several days to reach the Junction for the races.
From 1908 to 1930, the races were not held every year due to a decline in interest caused by the great depression and drought. From 1930 onward, the races were held at Dairy Creek station, east of Gascoyne Junction, until the outbreak of WWII.
After WWII, the race club officially changed its name to the Junction Race Club and began running the week before the Carnarvon Cup. Since 1947, the races have been held annually. The current location of the race club is situated 10km west of Gascoyne Junction on Jimba Jimba station.
